A Historical Gathering of Human Rights Defenders

This gathering of Human Rights Defenders to launch iDEFEND is an added historical milestone in the human rights movement in the Philippines.

In the midst of outright public bad-mouthing of and threats against Human Rights Defenders, alongside the so-far 900 plus drug related killings, many in outright disregard, among others, of the right to life, due process and rule of law, this launch is a convergence of unmistakable courage and determination to defend and to advance human rights.

The vaunted government war against illegal drugs has turned to be a war against human rights.  This is a systematic erosion of struggled-for belief in the 1987 Constitution that each citizen is endowed with human rights, elaborated in the section of the Bill of Rights.

This assembly draws the line between those who believe and stand for the universality and indivisibility of human rights. Not just in theory and concept, but in concrete recognition that no matter who is extrajudicially killed or whose rights are violated, s/he is a human being with dignity and human rights.  And that all human rights are for all, especially for the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable.  This unity demarcates from those, whether in or outside of government, but much more those who hold political power, who chooses or selects or acquiesce to whom these rights are only or discriminatorily to be bestowed.

iDEFEND is composed of HRDs who assert that human rights are indivisible, neither one or some rights can be exchanged for other rights.  This means that no economic or social rights should make up for the lost of civil and political rights, much less that economic and social gains or progress should be founded on impunity against the right to life, due process and rule of law perpetrated and perpetuated in an atmosphere of fear and of a coercive environment.

Pambungad na Tula ni Mr. Emmanuel Amistad, Executive Director, TFDP

Bawat bato, bawat pangalan

Simbolo ng mga nakipaglaban

Para sa ating demokrasya at kalayaan

Bawat bato ay alaala

Ng mga kasamang winala

Ng mga babaeng nilapastangan at ginahasa

Ng mga ikinulong at nagdusa

Ng mga libu-libong pinaslang

Ng mga pinahirapan at tinortyur.

Bawat pangalan

Ay kwento ng kadakilaan

Bawat pangalan

Ay sagisag ng pagmamahal sa Inang Bayan

Bawat pangalan

Ay mamamayan na nag-alay ng buhay

Para sa ating kalayaan.

Bawat Bato, bawat pangalan

Ay mga martir at bayani ng sambayanan.

Hindi ang diktador ang dapat kilalanin

Hindi ang magnanakaw ang dapat dakilain

Ang mamamayan, ang mga lumaban

Sila ang tunay na bayani ng lipunan.

Ang batong alay ay pagwagayway

Ng bandila ng mga nag-alay ng buhay.

Habang ang henerasyon namin ay nakatindig

Kailanman kasamaan ay ‘di mananaig.

Honoring a Martyr, Remembering His Heroism

romanoThirty-one years ago, Fr. Rudy Romano of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer was enforcibly disappeared.

He has not been seen since.

The enemies of freedom and democracy silenced the voice of a prophet of his time. He dared to stand against tyranny and dictatorship. His voice gave words to the anguish of a people longing for liberation from modern-day slavery and corruption.

His eyes saw the plunder of the nation’s wealth, the gross human rights violations and the capacity for terror of a regime reeling from the incessant assaults of the people’s resistance.

His arms sought the arms of the oppressed and linked with them in an act of solidarity. In the struggle to be free, priest and people became one. Truly, the man of God became a man for, and of the people.

Today, his voice lingers in the cries and shouts of the poor still struggling to be human, still longing for a life of dignity.

Today, his shadow haunts those who snatched him from our midst. Their restless souls are damned to perdition.

Today, the lessons from his life and struggles continue to find meaning:

In the struggle of the working class for an end to contractualization and slave labor;

In the fight to promote and defend human rights and human dignity;

In the battle for decent housing for the rural and urban poor;

In the struggle to free ourselves from foreign domination;

In the struggle to emancipate our women from patriarchy and discrimination;

In the struggle of all other sectors for a life of dignity and inclusion.

Today, we remember a martyr. Today, we honor a hero of the people’s struggles.

One of the thousand reasons why Ferdinand Marcos should not be given a hero’s burial is the disappearance of Fr. Rudy Romano thirty-one years ago, according to the human rights group Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP).

TFDP together with other human rights and church groups commemorate the 31st Anniversary of the disappearance of Fr. Rudy Romano in a gathering of human rights defenders, student leaders, teachers, youth and religious leaders on July 9, 2016, at the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Auditorium, Magallanes Street, Cebu City and on July 11 at the Museum of Courage and Resistance in Quezon City.

“The enemies of freedom and democracy silenced the voice of a prophet of his time. He dared to stand against tyranny and dictatorship,” Emmanuel Amistad, Executive Director of TFDP said in a statement read during the opening of the said event.

“His voice gave words to the anguish of a people longing for liberation from modern-day slavery and corruption”, he added.

Fr. Rudy Romano of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer was involuntarily disappeared on July 11, 1985 by suspected military men. He has not been seen ever since.
